Who should use these resources?
These resources are suitable for ophthalmology trainees preparing for the Part 2 FRCOphth OSCE and VIVA exams, as well as those seeking to refresh clinical knowledge or improve practical and communication skills.
How early should I start preparing?
It’s best to start early, especially if it’s been some time since your Part 2 written exam. Regular practice over several months helps consolidate knowledge, improve confidence, and ensure you’re familiar with a wide range of scenarios.
What is the most effective way to prepare?
Practising stations is key. Aim for 2–3 scenarios per session and seek feedback from colleagues or mentors. Simulating the OSCE/VIVA experience, either in small groups or through interactive platforms, helps improve both clinical reasoning and time management.
Can I practise on my own?
Yes. You can use videos, images, and online platforms like iPrepBuddy to simulate OSCE/VIVA scenarios at your own pace. This allows repeated practice with personalised feedback and varied patient responses.
How can I fit preparation around work?
Be flexible. Short practice sessions during commutes, lunchtimes, or study periods are effective. Even running through a few clinical videos or practising descriptions and sign recognition daily can make a big difference over time.
What is iPrepBuddy and how does it help?
iPrepBuddy is an interactive platform designed to practise clinical and communication OSCE/VIVA scenarios. It provides personalised feedback, allows repeated attempts, and simulates slightly different patient responses each time to broaden experience.
Should I do mock exams?
Yes. Creating mock OSCE/VIVA sessions with a partner is highly recommended. You can use slides or videos to replicate different scenarios, consolidate knowledge, and receive feedback in a controlled, low-pressure environment.
How many stations should I practise each session?
Aim for 2–3 stations per session to allow enough time for feedback and reflection. Over several months, this approach helps cover a wide range of clinical topics and scenarios.
Do these methods improve my exam performance?
Yes. Regular, structured practice improves both knowledge recall and practical skills, reduces exam-day anxiety, and increases confidence in handling the fast-paced OSCE and VIVA format.
Can I share resources with colleagues?
Absolutely. Sharing slides, videos, or practice scenarios with colleagues allows for collaborative learning and helps simulate real exam conditions.
